See and do > Exhibitions 2010
The first time the progressive music movement performed in earnest was at the Gärdet Festival in Stockholm in the summer of 1970. During this time, reports of mass killings of innocent people in Vietnam intensified. This was also a transition from the artistic desire to experiment and the avant-garde movement of the 1960s to the politically radical 1970s – the time of the Swedish Progg movement.
Art and music conveyed a message of freedom and human justice.
Until 22 August
Progg posters
The posters represent music festivals, political demonstrations and the women’s liberation movement. Designers include many well-known artists such as Kjartan Slettemark, Channa Bankier and Carl Johan De Geer.
The posters enabled them to reach a wider audience, beyond the traditional art observers. But posters were also designed by bands, organisers and amateurs. “Creating together” and “doing it yourself” were key words of the movement.
The exhibition is based on Håkan Agnesäter’s poster collection which was shown at the Nordic Museum in Stockholm last year. Håkan Agnsäter was part of the Progg movement and was the drummer in the band “Solen skiner” (The Sun is Shining).
Until 22 August
Political art
Gerhard Nordström’s painting “Sommaren 1970” (Summer 1970) depicts the artist’s traumatic experience of the contrast between his own summer in the beautiful Österlen and the horrific Song My Massacre committed by the US Army in Vietnam, which became public knowledge the same year. The painting is personal and at the same time general and strongly political – a fine example of art that wanted to show and change an unjust world.
The exhibition includes many works of art from the 1960s and 70s from our own collections and on loan from other museums. You will meet artists such as Lars Hillersberg, Lena Svedberg, Peter Dahl, Anna Sjödahl, Sven Ljungberg and Peter Tillberg.
Wednesdays during May and August, 17.00–20.00

Playlist – Moderna Museet c/o Jönköpings läns museum
“Playlist” presents a selection of well-known works from the Moderna Museet collection of contemporary art. The exhibition shows a wide spectrum of techniques: painting, film, video, installation and sculpture. The works form a story, which invites us to think about exclusion and creating barriers, but also about reconciliation and trust. How do we see others, how do we approach each other, and how do we interact? The exhibition is about prejudice, conception, dissonance and harmony.
Visitors are welcome to contribute to the exhibition by choosing pieces of music to the works of art. The joint playlist that develops forms a parallel musical track which opens for new interpretations.
The exhibitions includes works by Mona Hatoum, Doris Salcedo, Maria Lindberg, Thomas Ruff, Larry Clark, Cecilia Edefalk, Richard Billingham, Jaan Toomik, Jonas Dahlberg, Sirous Namazi, Seydou Keïta, Emily Jacir, Francis Alÿs, Mitra Tabrizian, Katarzyna Kozyra, Peter Geschwind, Biljana Djurdjevic, Peter Johansson, Klara Lidén, Louise Bourgeois, Jesper Just, Dan Wolgers, Sadie Benning and Alfredo Jaar.
The exhibition has been made possible with support from the Swedish Arts Council.

Photo exhibition: Shipping in Jönköping
Once upon a time Jönköping was a major shipping town. Lake Vättern and waterways linking to other locations in Sweden were important prerequisites for the town and its industries. For the people of Jönköping, shipping was a natural part of work and leisure. This small exhibition shows some fifty photos from the museum collections. They depict ships, harbours, skippers and passengers.
The photos were taken from the 19th century until the mid-20th century.
The opening of the exhibition coincides with the events Jönköpings Sjöhistoria and Allmogemarknad 11–12 September.

Many ‘finds’ in the museum shop
During archaeological excavations in connection with the construction of Arkivhuset in 2007, a number of discoveries were made. Some of finds were made by Isak Sjöstrand, a potter who was active in Jönköping during the latter part of the 18th century.
Inspired by Sjöstrand’s vessels, pots and plates, contemporary potter Elisabeth K Palm has created similar products.
These are for sale in the museum shop. Welcome to visit!
