EXHIBITIONS SUMMER 2009

John Bauer, the world-famous artist
John Bauer was born in Jönköping in 1882. Experience different aspects of his art through his paintings, sketches and our unique archive material.

John Bauer’s fairytale world

Enter the world of fairytales and let your imagination run wild!
In the fairytale wardrobe, princess Tuvstarr, trolls, the prince and many, many more of John Bauer’s fairytale figures await you.
An experience for children and adults of all ages.

16 May–13 September
Esther & John Bauer – an artist couple
Esther Ellqvist and John Bauer both wanted to become artists. They met at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts and married in 1906 after they had completed their studies. As in the case of many other female artists in the early 20th century, it seems that John’s success as an artist was more important to Esther than developing her own artistry.

Today, Esther is best known as the model for John’s delicate Fairy Princess, while his illustrations are part of the Swedish heritage.

The exhibition shows Esther’s unknown paintings, next to John’s famous works. A number of her paintings have never been shown publicly. A slide show of old photographs gives an insight into the couple’s life.

Vernissage: Saturday 16 May, 15.00
Showing in English: every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 14.00 during July and August
