Our services
Jönköping County Museum originated as the Norra Småland Association of Antiquities, formed in 1901. Since then, the institution has taken regional responsibility for archaeology and cultural heritage management in the county.
The Department of Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Management at Jönköping County Museum mainly carries out archaeological consultancy work, but also receives public grants to meet society’s demand for regional culture history competence. The work is aimed at preserving, looking after and spreading knowledge about ancient monuments and cultural environments. The department carries out inspections, reports and assessments for the county administrative board, comments on proposals from municipalities and government departments, and provides information to local folklore societies and the public. We also arrange courses and lectures about the prehistory of the county. The archaeologists participate in the setting up of exhibitions and in the museum’s work with schools and the inspection of newly reported ancient monuments.
The department today consists of 19 people with broad competence within archaeology and cultural geography. We also have research competence.
We carry out around 100 archaeological consultancy investigations every year.
We undertake:

- historic landscape analyses
- archaeological investigations
- archaeological pre-studies and final investigations
- map analyses
- antiquarian assessments of ancient monuments and cultural environments
- marine archaeological investigations
- advice and reports on cultural landscapes and ancient monuments,
- mapping with the aid of total station
- lectures, guided tours and cultural environment excursions
